FEMA restarts national flood program

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that it is resuming normal operations of the national flood insurance program (NFIP).

In a notice dated Dec. 28, FEMA wrote, “As of this evening, all NFIP insurers have been directed to resume normal operations immediately and advised that the program will be considered operational since December 21, 2018 without interruption.”

The agency faced heavy criticism last week from mortgage and housing groups after it suspended normal operations on Dec. 26 due to the partial government shutdown. The National Association of Realtors said that move could have disrupted thousands of mortgage closings.

Late last month, Congress reauthorized the program to May 31.
