Top Originators 2009

Inside our ranking of the nation's top-producing mortgage professionals

>> Move on to the Top Originators 2009 rankings

This is the first year Scotsman Guide has ranked the nation's top-producing mortgage professionals. And even though we enlisted the help and guiding hand of former Mortgage Originator magazine editor David Robinson — whose former publication had produced a similar ranking for the past 13 years — we didn't know completely what to expect.

We knew we wanted the nation's most-comprehensive list of broker volume — the tightest, most-solid, most-accurate, fail-safe, most intensely verified ranking in the mortgage industry. We knew we'd miss some originators, given the industry's attrition in recent years. We knew a few might miss us this year.

We were a little floored.

Roughly 600 mortgage brokers, bankers, originators and loan officers entered Scotsman Guide's Top Originators 2009. Of those, we are honored to present top entrants by:

We also spoke to some of our top originators and are happy to share their tips and tricks.

How it worked

We accepted entries at scotsmanguide.com between Jan. 1 and 31, 2010, no earlier or later.

To be eligible for consideration, originators must have had at least $30 million in loan volume or 100 closed home loans for the calendar year 2009. Only loans and volume that originators closed personally could be considered — in other words, loans on which a junior or associate originator or assistant received commission could not apply to originators' total.

Next, we requested 2009-production reports from all top entrants, as well as written verification of each originator's volume from a certified public accountant, the chief financial officer at the originator's company or a similar source. This verification included a statement certifying that no other originator received commission for these loans and that the numbers were accurate. We checked this data against original submissions and followed up where necessary. Only entrants whose data we could verify in this fashion made it to the final list.

About the rankings

This month's Scotsman Guide features originator rankings by multiple categories. A few other data points we've provided for you:

  • State: Location of originator's primary office.
  • Purchase Vs. Refi: The percentage of the originator's total loan volume (for volume list) or closings (for loans-closed list) that was for purchase loans compared to the share that was for refinances. These include FHA and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs loans.
  • Closing Ratio: The percentage of closed loans vs. applications taken. In some categories, we list the overall closing ratio as well as the ratio for different types of loans — purchases, refis, etc.
  • Apps. Taken: The percentage of loan applications the originator took personally. Some originators have aides who take some initial applications, though we only could count loans each originator closed personally toward that originator's 2009 production total.
  • Staff: The number of personal assistants for each entrant. Again, only loans the originator closed personally could apply to the originator's production total.

A few more items of note: In some cases, we accepted originators' best estimate for closing ratios and the percentage of applications they took personally. Although some entrants had other company representatives submit their initial information, we have confirmed all of their data that appear in these rankings. Finally, inclusion of any individual on this list does not constitute an endorsement of that individual by Scotsman Guide or Scotsman Guide Media.

We'd also like to extend a huge thank-you to David Robinson, who handled all entrants' verification — and then some. We probably should thank his local FedEx, UPS and U.S. Postal Service carriers, too.
